How we choose what you see
Version 1 · October 30, 2026This page is available in English, Italian and Dutch. The three versions are equally valid. If they differ, the meaning that is most favourable to you applies.
There are many nights on Givibes. This page explains, in plain words, how we decide their order in Tonight and in Upcoming, and which venues we suggest to you.

1. In short
The system does not learn by itself and does not use artificial intelligence: the weights are written by us and are the same for everyone. Only what you did in the app (section 2) makes the result different for you. It changes only the order: no night is hidden from you because of its score.
2. The criteria and how much they count
| Criterion | What it means | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Friends | How many of your friends saved the night or are going, when you can see it | 28% |
| Distance | How close the venue is to you. If we do not know where you are, your usual area counts instead: we work it out on the spot from the venues of the nights you saved or said “Going” to in the last 120 days (only while “Personalised order” is on). At 8 km it counts a little more than half, at 16 km almost nothing | 20% |
| Your interests | Whether the night matches the interests you chose in Settings, what you searched for in the last 30 days, and what you did with the nights of that venue | 18% |
| Time | How long until the night starts | 10% |
| Popularity | How many people saved the night recently; a heart counts less as hours pass and stops counting after 3 days | 8% |
| Interest of others | How often the people who see the night save it, in the last 14 days; it counts only after the night has been shown at least 30 times | 8% |
| New venue | Whether the venue published its first night on Givibes less than 60 days ago | 5% |
| “Verified” | Whether our staff has checked that the venue exists and that the people who manage it are entitled to (a venue that is not verified gets 40% of this criterion) | 3% |
If a criterion is missing (for example, we do not know your location), it is left out and the others count proportionally more; a night is never penalised only because a piece of information is missing. Givibes' demonstration accounts (“·sim”) do not count in any of these criteria: their hearts and “Going” do not move the order. The same applies to hearts and “Going” on nights with “Private hearts”, which the venue or Givibes' staff uses for nights on sensitive topics: they do not count in friends, popularity or personal signals.
In Upcoming we also use your own signals: the nights you gave a heart, opened, flipped or skipped, and the venues you hid. A night you skip several times moves down; a venue you hide disappears until you show it again.
With “Personalised order” off, we do not use your searches, what you did with nights and venues, your Upcoming signals or your usual area (section 6).
Recommended venues
In Explore, Recommended venues are venues you do not follow yet. They also get a score with fixed weights: how many of your friends follow them (30%), how many nights they publish in the next 7 days (22%), how many of those nights match the interests you chose (18%), how much you recently looked at that venue, its nights or its Vibes (12%, only while “Personalised order” is on), whether the venue is new (10%) and whether it is “Verified” (8%). We never use how many people follow a venue: it is not a ranking.
3. Variety
After the score, we apply a few rules so that you do not see always the same things:
- never more than two nights of the same venue in a row (the next one moves down, it does not disappear);
- at least one new venue among the first ten results;
- in Upcoming, about one night in seven is outside your usual tastes, and about one in ten comes from a venue that few people have seen.
4. The label under a night
Under some nights you see a short reason, for example “3 friends”, “Near you” (less than 3 km), “New” or “Free entry”. It is the criterion that counted most for that night.
5. What we never do
- No venue can pay to change the order. There is no advertising on Givibes.
- “Chosen by Givibes” is an editorial choice of our staff, never paid, and it does not change the order.
- We do not use which people's profiles you look at, and we do not buy or receive data about you from other services.
- We do not measure how long you stay on a screen.
6. Your options
- Switch “Personalised order” off (Settings › Privacy › “Personalised order”). Nights stay in order using only the shared criteria: the interests you chose in Settings, your friends, popularity and the interest of others (without names), time, “Verified”, new venues and, in Tonight, the distance from the location your phone sends, if you allowed it; in Upcoming your city counts, not your location. We stop recording how you use the app and immediately delete what we had recorded, including your Upcoming signals.
- Reset my signals (in Upcoming, under “How we choose nights”): deletes your hearts, skips and records of how you use the app, and the order starts again from zero.
- Hide a venue's nights in Upcoming, and show them again from Settings › Hidden in Upcoming.
- Explore and the map show all nights, with filters you choose.
How we process the data used here, and your right to object, are described in the Privacy Policy, section 4.1.
7. For venues
The same criteria decide where a venue's nights appear. The Conditions for venues refer to this page (section 6). When we change a criterion or a weight, we update this page and, for venues, we give notice as set out in those Conditions.
